There is a dearth of textbooks on neonatal anesthesia as a subspecialty. This novel book helps in filling that gap by discussing various aspects of anesthesia for the newborn, neonate, and the premature in meticulous detail.
It has 50 chapters over 997 pages and covers nearly all aspects of neonatal anesthesia. It is divided into five distinct sections – basics; developmental aspects; special aspects; case-based management for common procedures; and anesthesia for advanced and uncommon surgeries.
The foundation is built highlighting the huge burden of neonatal morbidity and mortality – including perioperative. This data fairly depicts the health status of a country as well as the government and public health initiatives.
It highlights the relevant embryology and anatomical development aspects, physiology, common medical, biochemical, metabolic and hematological diseases of the newborn, and the relevant pharmacology in the neonates. These basics expand our understanding while managing this extremely fragile patient category.
The book has several outstanding chapters that provide knowledge regarding the management of everyday simple procedures to the most complex and latest advances in neonatal surgeries, both inside the OR and outside. The case-based discussions make it a very interesting read. It has discussed the increasing concerns of neonatal anesthesiologist regarding the role of anesthetic drugs in the neurodevelopment of the young brain. The chapters on fluid, electrolytes and glucose homeostasis, blood management, on perioperative workup, difficult airway assessment and management, on ventilation strategies, and oxygen therapy help us to be better prepared while treating the neonates.
The book provides knowledge regarding some often-overlooked topics in neonates – pain – assessment and management; palliative care and neonatal rehabilitation, some very rare and uncommon clinical conditions that a neonatal anesthesiologist may encounter, and also discusses ethical concerns in this age group.
STRENGTHS
The book is well referenced for further reading
The language of the book is intelligible
The wisdom shared by the experienced authors is the icing on the cake
The charts and tables provide concise information
Special points for covering ethics and research in this patient group.
WEAKNESS
I missed regional anesthesia and regional blocks in elaborate detail
A chapter on anesthesia for neonatal cardiac procedures will complete the array of topics covered in this book.
To sum up, this book is a ready reckoner for anything you are likely to require for managing a neonate – addressing your simplest queries to the toughest dilemmas. The pearls of wisdom from this book will help prevent errors, critical incidents, and complications in the patient group.
This comprehensive and well-illustrated book is a must for your library. It is an invaluable resource for the trained neonatal anesthesiologist as well as a postgraduate student or a fellow training in neonatal anesthesia.
